As a whole, most homes never seem to have enough closet space or storage and the longer we live somewhere the less we seem to have. When storage starts to become a problem, there are two things we can do. One is to evaluate our belongings and figure out which items to get rid of. That is not always an easy thing to do, so the second choice might be to get a free standing closet to help you solve your storage of problems.
Depending upon what kind of closet you are thinking of getting and what room will decide how movable it will be. If you have it in a bedroom, you might want to make sure that you are able to move it to a different spot whenever you might want to reorganize or remodel your bedroom.
Your bedroom may not be the room that is in need of extra storage. You might need a more permanent structure to let your guests have a place for their belongings like their coats or for their clothing should they be staying you for an extended visit. By having this available your guests they will be able to hang up their clothes instead of leaving them in their suitcases.
You can purchase already made free standing closets. However there are a couple of reasons why you might want to think of making your own. With the ready made ones you may not be able to get the right size to fit your room and secondly would be the fact they are a lot more expensive than making your own. Building your own is not as hard as you might think. If you understand that they are basically wooden boxes with a clothes pole and maybe a couple of shelves for shoes, there is not much to it. You just need plywood or particle board. Both are study and less expensive than other wood and if you want protection for your clothes you can always line the closet with some cedar.
Take the plywood cut in the dimensions you need and frame them with some one by twos, take some two by fours to make a strong base, put the pieces together, line with cedar if you want, add the clothes rack one foot below the bottom of the closet top and then you can add a few shelves. You can also add doors with piano hinges if you like or if you do not want doors you can take a small curtain rod and decorative curtains to use in lieu of doors. It is your choice to stain or paint. Painting might be a better option since it is easier to keep clean and can be quite attractive if you use a color that accents the paint on your walls.
You can make your closet as elaborate as you want. If you want more than a couple of shelves you can add any type of organizers that would be used for regular closets. You can also add hooks that can be used for some shoes, for purses and other accessories you like.
Your free standing closet does not have to be for clothes. You can use them for a variety of different things, toys, games, books or have it as an extra storage place for your towels and linens.
If you have an old cabinet that has kind of lost its appeal and is not used for much except for maybe junk, you might want to take a closer look at it. You might be able to refinish it and turn it into your storage closet. Add a pole for your close and you nearly have an instant closet. If you need storage for items that are not as long as coats and dresses you can always make the closet have the height as a regular size free standing closet.
