Getting some Character in to Your Home

Modern houses seem to be very bland in there appearance and general seem to lack a bit of character. We’ve all looked around new build homes with their magnolia painted walls and thought that they look a little bit bland. Although the advantages of moving in to a newly build property are clear – mainly they will require no or little maintenance and are under guarantee – they do often seem very generic and in fact you could be in any house anywhere.

What you need to do is to put your stamp on the place and this doesn’t have to cost a lot or take a lot of effort – you won’t even have to decorate it, there will be no need to even light a paint brush! The way to get some character in to your home is to choose some choice pieces of furniture. I’m not talking about going to your local home store and purchasing a nice new bit of furniture – new is the last thing that you want in this circumstance – you want something with some character.

Buying or creating your own piece of reproduction furniture or shabby chic furniture is an ideal way of getting some character in to your home. Now as I mentioned previously you can either buy this furniture ready to be positioned in your home or you can make your own. Now, the reproduction furniture will require a little more skill and is perhaps best left to the professional, but the shabby chic stuff is definitely something that you can do your self. You can just call by and second hand furniture store and pick up whatever item of furniture you are looking for, take it home, give it a couple of coats of paint, and there you have it – your own unique piece of furniture.

The shabby chic style furniture and reproduction style works very well in newly built homes as it is a direct contrast to the clean and modern interior lines and finished. Getting some contrasting styles in your house is a great way to make it your home – warm and welcoming.
