Painted farmhouse kitchen tables have a long and interesting story to tell us about our homes. Often lasting for generations, these antique styled tables are made from reclaimed wood. Where is this wood found I hear you ask – well table makers find it usually from existing objects, such as barrels, old homes or barns, and even pre-existing damaged tables themselves. The reason for this is that it is difficult to find tables that are in good condition, and any that are usually passed down through family generations.
It is the material used that creates that perfect farmhouse table look. The beaten, worn appearance of a real farm table is recreated by re-cutting and modifying wood to replicate the old style. This new wood pattern gives the table a fresh look. Woods used in these kinds of tables are generally solid varieties, such as walnut or oak.
Before the wood is reborn as a table, it has to be treated correctly first. The treatment process is designed to remove any old nails or debris still stuck in the wood so that the wood is perfectly smooth before being used. Any imperfections in the wood are removed through a heating process as well – any bacterial or mold is removed while this is taking place as well.
The distressed look that makes up an antique farmhouse kitchen table is achieved by beating the surface of the reclaimed wood with chains and hammers so that it looks the part. This is by far the quickest method to make a farmhouse table look as though it has been well used, and this is what most of the cheaper farmhouse products get their looks through. The most expensive tables are hand carved and painted to get a much finer and authentic appearance, but, as usual, you can expect to pay substantially more for one of these items.
